Prefab Tiny House
Building New Roofing

If the roofing of your prefab tiny house is leaky and old, it will be a good idea to build a new roof rather than investing in repairs. It will be even better to build the new roof over the existing one. This will not only provide a new roof but also an improved barrier from the heat, cold, and rains. Moreover, the old roofing can offer great insulation to your home. The steps to build a new roof for prefab homes are discussed below.

Build End Frames

You can start building the roof of the prefab tiny from the end. You can use 2 x 6 rafters and a 2 x 10 top stringer to build the frame. You will need many top stringers to make all the frames, but make sure that you start from the ending frames. You can then overlap the stringers by six inches to finish from one end of the home to the other.

Build Rafters

If you are planning to use one of the frames as a template, you will need to use a piece of plywood and blocks of wood for the corners. After putting them in place, you can lay out the rafters. To assemble the rafter frame fast, you may use a rafter hanger. Keep in mind that you will need enough rafters to place one frame every sixteen inches.

Lay Plywood Sheathing

For sheathing, you can use half-inch plywood sheet. Make sure that you lay down the sheathing over the complete area of the roofing. In addition, you will need to cut the plywood sheathing around plumbing and roof vents. After securely installing the plywood roof sheeting, you will need to lay down the roofing felt and staple it to the sheathing.

Install Shingles and Soffit

Now you can install the roof shingles. You can start at the edge of the roof, securing the shingles with roofing nails. You can use a chalk to draw a line along which you need to install the shingles. This will help you ensure that the rows of shingles that you add to the roof are straight and leveled. After installing the first row of shingles, it will be easy for you to install rest of the shingles, keeping the first row as the reference. After installing the shingles, you can install the soffits to have new roofing for your prefab home.
